Find out what “not yet” means
Do not accept the phrase at face value and disappear. Ask what is actually holding the customer back, what they need to think about, and when it makes sense to discuss it again. That could be budget, timing, another decision-maker, a move, planning permission or simply that they are comparing other options.
A useful question is: “What would need to happen before this becomes worth revisiting?” Then agree a sensible next step or date.
Record a real follow-up trigger
“Call later” is too vague. Store the expected month, event or condition and the customer’s preferred channel. If there is no definite date, agree a reasonable check-in window rather than relying on memory.
In practice, a future opportunity should remain visible until there is either progress, a definite pause or a clear no.
Use the original reason when you return
When the date arrives, remind the prospect why you agreed to reconnect. For example: “You asked me to come back in September once the lease decision was clearer. Has that now moved forward?”
This feels more natural because it honours the earlier conversation. It also makes it easier for the buyer to tell you what has actually changed.
Do not make every message about closing
The first goal is to restart a real conversation. Ask about their circumstances, whether they found another option, what part still matters most or whether the timing has changed. If price was the issue, break down what matters most to them now and see whether the sale can be planned in stages rather than forcing a full close immediately.
That can mean agreeing a future date, securing part of the sale where appropriate, or simply keeping a genuine opportunity alive.
Use more than phone calls
Some customers will avoid an awkward phone conversation but reply to a message or email within seconds. A sensible follow-up process should therefore use the channel most likely to get an honest answer, while respecting preferences and opt-outs.
LeadRestore's Recovery Signal Framework treats timing, unfinished intent, historic notes and a legitimate next action as signals that should be considered together.
